Joey Gill

Web Developer — University of South Carolina Aiken

Biography

he/him/his

Joey Gill is a self-described "Website Everything Person" at University of South Carolina Aiken in Aiken, South Carolina, having worked in that capacity since April 2023. Before higher education and web development, Joey worked as a digital content producer for local news organizations for eight years, working for TV stations in Nashville, Charlotte, and Augusta, Georgia; and on a digital optimization team for the USA TODAY Network of newspapers. Previously, Joey also worked in radio while in college for iHeartMedia and Beasley Media Group.

While Joey majored in Communications at his alma mater (the same university he works for now), he is self-taught in web development, having built websites as a hobby since he was a child. His jobs in television helped him grow more as a website developer, interested in creating engaging user interfaces and experiences to enhance news coverage on the local news websites he managed. Joey's work led to him winning awards for "Best Website" from the Georgia Associated Press Media Editors, and a Georgia Association of Broadcasters (GABBY) Award for "Best Use of Digital Platforms: Social Media".

In his spare time, Joey very much enjoys not looking at screens and living a life of disconnected solitude, having largely quit social media when he left television. Joey's interests include mental health and personal growth, journaling, meditation, being a human Shazam (he knows his music and pop culture trivia), and being a computer nerd (ask him how he built a file server and a remote workstation using a Mac Mini and an iPad). Joey enjoys hiking mountain trails (his favorite being in the Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado) where he recently hiked 10,000 plus feet above sea level to the highest point you can hike on foot. On a standard weekend though, you'll find Joey taking plenty of naps to rest his ADHD brain, reading, and learning how to knit. He made his first knot, I mean, that's a start. Joey also has a soft spot for animals, his proudest life achievements were becoming friends with a sea lion at the Georgia Aquarium and holding a baby Joey from the Nashville Zoo, accomplishing his bucket list item, "A Joey Holding A Joey."
