More Than an Extension: WordPress REST API Customization

WordPress's REST API has been around for over a decade in various forms, and can serve as an incredibly useful tool for developers. The default endpoints that query a site's database are modifiable and extendable, but what can be even more useful is the ability to create custom endpoints. These could be custom queries to the database as well, or they could be queries to external systems.

Learn (or get a refresher on) the basics of the WordPress REST API and explore the different ways it can be expanded through examples from the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester's website. We'll look at modifying default endpoints (including why you might not want to), custom endpoints that query the database, and custom endpoints that query an external system (Smartsheet).
