Description

AInspector browser extension is designed to help people learn and understand web standards for accessibility, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) and the ARIA in HTML specifications to ensure web resources are accessible to people with disabilities.

One of the ways AInspector helps people learn about accessibility is by making accessibility rule requirements the primary feature of the user interface, showing the results of groups or rules organized by WCAG guidelines or rule categories. Rule categories are groups of rules with labels more familiar to web developers, for example form controls, images and headings.

Other accessibility tools tend to focus on individual element level failures with information on how to fix the element, without providing information on the accessibility requirement and how it impacts people with disabilities. Element level tools tend to create a "whack-a-mole" approach to accessibility, and often developers can change the code to remove the accessibility error message without really addressing the underlying accessibility issue. AInspector on the other hand reports whether a rule passes, fails or requires a manual check. So developers and testers get a higher level view of which WCAG accessibility requirements apply to a web page and which requirements they seem to be fulfilling or have issues with.

When users pick a rule group, they can view the results of individual rules and see how many elements in each rule are passing, failing or require a manual check. This provides developers and testers a way to see how well or how badly a particular rule requirement is being satisfied on a web page. Identification of manual checks helps people learn about accessibility requirements that are not identified in other accessibility tools that focus mostly on rules that can provide failure information. Information on results include: summary, definition, rule scope, actions, purpose, techniques, target elements, WCAG compliance level and related WCAG success criteria.

Selecting a particular rule from the rule group view provides element level information on the elements that pass, fail or require manual checks. When an element is selected from the list additional detailed information on the element related to accessibility is displayed, including: rule definition, action, role, accessible name, accessible description, tag name, important attributes, ARIA attributes and result type.

AInspector Sidebar is an open-source tool that is totally free to use and does not track any information on users or the web pages analyzed.
